REI Co-op to open first Kentucky store inside Paddock Shops

A new-to-market specialty outdoor retailer is coming to Louisville.

Seattle-based REI Co-op will open its first Kentucky store this fall at 4350 Summit Plaza Drive inside the Paddock Shops, according to a news release.

The 31,100-square-foot store will sell outdoor gear and apparel for camping, cycling, hiking, running, fitness and climbing and will also feature a full-service bike shop staffed by certified mechanics, according to the release.

A REI representative declined to disclose how much the co-op is investing in the Louisville store but construction is expected to cost $1.4 million, according to a permit filed with Louisville Metro Planning and Design. North Canton, Ohio-based Fred Olivieri Construction Company is listed as the contractor on the project.

The Louisville store is expected to employ 50 people and is one of 10 stores REI plans to open this year.

“We have been interested in Louisville for nearly a decade,” Lindsay Struve, REI regional director, said in the release. “Even prior to announcing our new store, more than 29,000 REI members from the community have connected with the co-op for their outdoor adventures through our online resources and stores in adjacent states. As we open our doors, we are also excited to develop lasting partnerships with local nonprofits to support their efforts to welcome more people outside.”

REI is the nation’s largest consumer co-op, according to the release, with 24 million members, including 78,600 members in Kentucky and 29,600 members in Louisville. You do not have to be a member to shop at REI but those who do join the co-op receive benefits such as a used gear trade-in program, discounts on shop services and experiences and a share of the co-op’s annual profits based on qualifying purchases, according to the release. It costs $30 for a lifetime membership, according to REI’s website.

The co-op operates more than 175 stores across 42 states and the District of Columbia.

The Louisville REI store comes six months after the Paddock Shops sold for $96.8 million to CBRE Strategic Partners U.S. Value 9, through a joint venture with Fairbourne Properties. The 353,665-square-foot shopping center is 88% leased, home to tenants like Aerie, Barnes & Noble, Mitchell’s Fish Market, Talbots and more.
